Sight Loss due to Dr Jaideep Dhama Rajouri Garden, New Delhi

#1
Hi, i wish to lodge a complaint against carelessness displayed in treating my father’s ophthalmic condition by Dr Jaideep Dhama (Center for Sight, Rajouri Garden) which lead to his vision loss of about 90% and his mental stress at such an age. He is still under treatment and we have been made to come to their Center at Safdarjung Enclave; however we got him treated at Rajouri Garden. Having to travel from Subhash Nagar to Safdarjung Enclave in itself is a horrible experience considering the traffic conditions.

I will detail the sequence here for reference:

My Father (Buta Ram) underwent a cataract surgery (right eye) at Center for Sight (Rajouri Garden, New Delhi) on 6th Apr 20th 2012. The surgery was performed by Dr Jaideep Dhama.
I must note that during all the interactions we found him evading any in depth discussions or explaining the situation / after effects etc.
The day we consulted the doctor he referred the surgery for right eye. And the Center staff who takes care of the med claims asked about the TPA under which we wanted to get the operation done. Since the center is not listed under authorized list of the TPA they made us to sign that we are getting operated at Safdarjung Enclave Center, and asked us if we get any enquiry we must tell them that my father underwent surgery at Sufdarjung Enclave (otherwise the TPA would reject their claim) – this is very unethical, but since the center was close to our residence we agreed.
On the planned day of Surgery we reached there at given time, and my father was administered with medications (eye drops and ointments). After repeating the procedure of putting eye drops, and waiting for the doctor to come, finally doctor came at around 10 AM. When we asked when you would start the operation, the attendants told us that they are waiting for the anesthetist , and as soon as he reaches they would start the procedure.
Then came the Doctor (Jaideep Dhama) to see my Father, while they were still waiting for the anesthetist. They took my father to the examination room, and after examining he suggested that my Father’s pupil is not completely dilated, and he would suggest going for the operation two days later (while administering more medicines at home, so that pupil is fully dilated)
In the meantime doctor went for another operation. When he came back he saw my father and asked him to come to Operation Theater.
This was little suspicious as if the pupil was not dilated in more than 3 hours, how it could dilate in 30 mins suddenly.(Later I came to know that Jaideep Dhama was not a resident doctor of this center, did we wanted to finish up the case, and didn’t wanted to come again on Tuesday just for 1 operation? Did they wanted to utilize the anesthetist since she was already there? Not sure but didn’t sound correct). Anyways, since doctor was saying they can go for it, how could we deny that…?

He was operated and doctor told us that the operation was successful. We were given instructions around precautions to be followed for next three-four weeks.

Another point that I wanted to highlight here is that the operated patient (my father) was made to sit on the reception since doctor wanted to give some instructions. He was waiting there for almost thirty minutes, and every time I asked the reception staff told us that the doctor is coming. After having to make us wait for about 30 mins, they said doctor is busy and you can come around 5 PM in the evening.

Now it has been close to 2 months now, and we are still struggling to get my father’s eye sight back.

Post-surgery, on all follow up calls, Jaideep Dhama said its normal to have such condition, and he will be normal.

Now we have been made to go to Safdarjung Enclave center which is quite far from our place and their so called specialists were seeing my father.

We have shown my father to other doctors as well and they say it might be a human error.

Doctors at Center for Sight say wait and watch, things will improve.
Finally we showed him to Mahipal Singh (Chairman of CFS), and he says since we has not seen my father’s condition from start – he cannot comment anything, but the condition will improve.

Are doctors at CFS are so lethargic and poorly educated that –
• They don’t record the patient history? In case some other doctor tries to see the case he has to start afresh?
• Is this the Quality Service CFS is providing to its patients?
• What is the diagnosis in this case? It’s not written anywhere. Is it by intention or it represents the poor quality of doctors that CFS has.

I still remember the CFS policy hung on their walls (and it’s actually made to hung on the walls) which speaks about Grievance addressal.
I’m still waiting for my grievance to be addressed……..

If you take opinion from another private eye specialist in Delhi, he will never tell the truth since every eye specialist knows pretty well the other eye specialist. They do keep meeting here and there. Only government doctor may tell the truth. My best bet is see any famous govt retired eye doctor in any non-Delhi area for non-objective evaluation of your father's eye operation.

Vikram you're not alone in the boat, we all are in there. Due to impotent legal system in India, doctors are free to do anything they like. For a meager compensation you'll need to pursue the case in consumer court for 20 years or so.

I want a site where reviews of every doctor in India should be saved just like Ebay reviews for the whole world to see.

Thanks for replying.

The only thing that pinches me is that we go to these reputed centers considering that they would take best care of the patients.

Even after paying hefty amounts, we are getting this kind of attention.

Its not about compensation, but about raising our voice against them

And recently i heard that Dr Jaideep Dhama has left Centre for Sight

I would not comment about Dr Jaideep Dhama or any other doctor, hospital in particular.

But I want to tell you how things work in India - doctors/hospitals give free treatment to Police, Judges and politicians so that they can do all kinds of illegal activity with public(you and me). I'll show you plenty of hospitals where even after death of patient they tell all lies and keep charging for ICU. Come to Dehradun - I'll show you no-1 hospital - even if the patient is going to die very soon - the hospital will not leave the patient so that can make more and more money.

I think we just lost it. There is no more communication happening now. CFS has stopped replying to e-mails. I am not in India at the moment and hence cannot do personal follow ups.
